I’ve had such fun this week dressing up as Eva Peron, political leader and wife of Argentine president Juan Peron as she is depicted in the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical, Evita.

Don’t Cry For Me Argentina is the standout anthem from the musical which is otherwise full of outstanding songs. In the show, Evita goes onto the balcony of the Casa Rosada on the night of Peron’s presidential electoral victory in 1946 and addresses her adoring supporters, telling them that despite her initial goal of achieving fame and glory, she has found her true calling to be the people of her country.

The story follows Evita’s early life, rise to power, charity work and death and is one of the great female roles in musical theatre. The role was originally played in London’s West End by Elaine Paige and on Broadway by Patti LuPone. Madonna played Evita in the film version.

Evita started life as a concept album in 1976 and was so successful it was turned into a musical which went on to become a world-wide hit with productions around the world.
