Siam during the First World War – When Thailand Went to War in 1917

During the First World War, Thailand, then known as Siam, was the only Southeast Asian nation to remain formally independent despite strong European colonial influence. Initially neutral, Siam entered the war on the side of the Allies in July 1917, declaring war on Germany and Austria-Hungary. King Vajiravudh believed participation would strengthen Siam’s international standing and help revise unequal treaties imposed by Western powers. Siam sent the Siamese Expeditionary Forces to Europe in 1918. The force consisted of about 1,300 men, including pilots, mechanics, medical staff, and transport troops. Although they arrived late in the war and saw limited combat, Siamese personnel served mainly in transport and aviation support roles in France. Their presence symbolized Siam’s commitment to the Allied cause and marked the country’s first military deployment overseas. After the war, Siam joined the League of Nations and gained greater diplomatic recognition.
