The Highest Form of Courage: What Platoon is Really About (Film Analysis)

Platoon is one of the greatest Vietnam War films of all time, and it has a special place in the Vietnam War film canon. In FMJ and Apocalypse Now, the main character doesn't have a force pulling against the pressure to ditch morality in favor of a life driven by our animalistic impulses. In Platoon, Taylor does have such a positive force, and his name is Sgt. Elias. Elias goes head to head with his foil, Sgt. Barnes. and the results are fascinating. At the core, I believe the battle is also for the definition of courage: Is Barnes the more courageous man for being willing to do whatever it takes to secure victory, or is Elias more courageous for being willing to stand up for the virtues he believes in?

That is the question I discuss in this video.
