Thousands Honor Rev. Jesse Jackson, Illinois Food Grants Deadline, Free Test Prep Program Expanded!
Welcome to CJ News, powered by the Chicagoland Journal! Join Mary Johnson as she covers the latest stories shaping the Chicago area:
Here are three major stories making headlines in Illinois.
More than 10,000 people gathered in Chicago to celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson Sr., founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. The weekend services featured remarks from national and international leaders, clergy, and community figures, along with musical tributes from Stevie Wonder and Jennifer Hudson. Speakers reflected on Jackson’s decades-long influence on civil rights, economic justice, and global human rights.
Meanwhile, the Illinois Stewardship Alliance is encouraging farmers, food businesses, and community groups to apply for the Local Food Infrastructure Grant (LFIG) program before the March 27 deadline. The grants help fund projects like cold storage, food processing equipment, and distribution systems that move Illinois-grown food to schools, markets, and families while strengthening the state’s agricultural economy.
Illinois is also continuing the Prepare for Illinois’ Future Program, a free test preparation initiative designed to help students prepare for graduate school, professional licensing exams, and workforce credentials. Governor J. B. Pritzker has proposed additional funding to extend the program through June 2027 after more than 12,000 students enrolled and saved over $30 million in prep costs.
