Code as Agent Harness: Beyond Generation

Code as Agent Harness, a theoretical framework that centers code as the foundational substrate for building executable, verifiable, and stateful AI agent systems. Instead of viewing code merely as a target output, the authors from the University of Illinois, Meta, and Stanford propose utilizing programs as an operational environment for agents to reason, act, and model the world. This survey systematically organizes the field into three layers: the harness interface to connect models with the environment, harness mechanisms to manage planning and memory, and scaling capabilities for multi-agent systems. Thereby, this literature provides a detailed roadmap to address the challenges of AI reliability and autonomy across real-world applications, ranging from software engineering assistants to robotic control
