A sad legend of love and the "island of dead captains".
Next to the famous Gospa od Škrpjela, right opposite Perast, there is another island - St. George with a church of the same name.

This is the location of the events of the legend, which has been passed down from mouth to mouth for over 200 years.

During the French occupation, the island housed a garrison in which Ante Slovića served.
On the shore, in Perast, he met the beautiful Katica and they fell in love, hoping that when the war was over, they would stay in Perast and be able to live together.

One day, the inhabitants of Perast rebelled against the occupiers.
The French troops were ordered to fire a salvo of cannons from the island towards the city.

Ante fired the first salvo. Immediately after that, a white flag was raised over the city.

Ante rushed into the city in search of Katica. And found her dead in her bed, killed by that first cannonball.

Katica's body was sent by boat to the island of St. George to be buried there. Ante went with her, and when he got to the island, he enounced everything worldly and began to live there as a hermit, guarding the grave of his beloved.

Soon, the French left Perast, and Ante remained on the island as a monk. Every night, he lit a candle in her memory. When the candle failed to light, the inhabitants went to the island and found him dead at Katica's grave.

They were buried together, and the graves are still on the island.

It is not possible to get there, but you can get a good look at the island from a boat, heading to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks.
