Residents of French village say U.S. Defense Secretary Hegseth not welcome for D-Day visit

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth travelled to Normandy to mark the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings but did not attend the main international ceremony in Langrune-sur-Mer. Residents said his “warlike views” and anti-democratic rhetoric made him unwelcome, and a local association urged cancelling his visit; the mayor declined comment, noting the event was a memorial. At Langrune, attendees included US veterans and British Defence Minister John Healey, while French PM Sébastien Lecornu honored the soldiers. In Colleville-sur-Mer, Hegseth criticised immigration and urged Europe to boost its own defense, as Lecornu called for Europe to build greater defense autonomy.
