David Eby ‘really is a fringe figure’: Poll shows premier at odds with BC on oil

A new poll shows 66% of Canadians support plans to expand Alberta's oil and gas industry, including 80% of Albertans, 58% of Quebecers, 76% of Liberal voters, and 60% of British Columbians. Only 23% of BC residents oppose it. David Eby is in that 23%. TransAlta just bought two gas plants in Colorado for approximately US $725 million.

Topics covered:
► Polling data showing strong Canadian support for expanding Alberta's oil and gas industry across all provinces, all political parties, and all demographic groups, with BC Premier David Eby representing a minority position even within his own province where 60% support the expansion he opposes

► Iain's comparison: the proportion of BC residents opposing Alberta's oil expansion is smaller than the proportion of Canadians who support capital punishment, yet the latter is treated as an extreme fringe position while Eby's view is presented as the reasonable mainstream voice of BC

► TransAlta Corporation's announcement of a US $725 million acquisition of two natural gas power plants in Colorado, representing Canadian capital and investment leaving for the United States because getting things done in Canada has become prohibitively difficult

► David Eby blocking the Forsite Okanagan capacity upgrade project in 2022, a 30-kilometre natural gas pipeline to expand supply capacity in the Okanagan, while now claiming to support LNG after BC's economy deteriorated and credit agencies began issuing downgrades

► Elizabeth May appearing on television to warn about atmospheric chemistry and the end of the world through fossil fuels, in the same news cycle as a poll showing even Green Party supporters are evenly split on expanding Alberta's oil industry

► Steve Guilbault's on-camera statement that he is not closing the door to returning to serve king and country, and Jim's response that there are questions about undisclosed documents related to green scheme companies that Guilbault has not yet answered

► Jim and Iain's core argument: the people blocking Canadian energy development are a fringe minority representing 23% of BC residents, they do not speak for the Canadian public, and the country is paying the price through food bank lineups, capital flight, and a recession while the wealth remains beneath Canada's feet waiting to be developed

Who is the real fringe: the 66% of Canadians who want to develop Alberta's energy wealth or the 23% who are blocking it?
