This Fenty Hella Thicc Mascara definitely gives you fuller, hella-thicc lashes but I’m not completely sold on the technique.

I was really excited to try this product because Fenty Beauty products are usually top-notch, with formulas that are both outstanding and innovative.

First off, the packaging is fun, different, and creative.

Second, they made this in a brown shade, which is what I personally use, and I love that it feels more inclusive for those of us who don’t wear black mascara. I have some unusual blue and purple undertones, so black mascara can wash me out and look a little too harsh against my skin. I will say this shade is a bit darker than most brown mascaras I’ve tried. It leans slightly burgundy, whereas I expected something cooler toned, but overall it ended up being a really great match for my hair.

Application was interesting. The brush is definitely bigger than what I’m used to using these days, and I found it a little messier than I would’ve liked. That said, if you accidentally get a little product somewhere other than your lashes, it cleans up pretty effortlessly with a cotton swab.

The one thing I didn’t love is that the “hella thicc” effect seems to come from the formula leaving small deposits of product between the lower sections of your lashes to create that fuller, fanned-out look. For me, it read a little clumpy. In the end, I separated my lashes out, which took more time than I would’ve liked but the final results actually looked pretty good.

Passing the wear test

I wasn’t sure if this was going to flake throughout the day, so I really put it to the test: eight hours of errands, driving, tanning, red light therapy you name it. I didn’t see any flaking at all.

And if you want to yell at me… yes, I accidentally fell asleep in my makeup. That was definitely not planned. It did flake a little by the next morning, but honestly, it wasn’t terrible and my lashes still looked surprisingly good.

Overall, I’d give this an 3.5 out of 5 stars

I will say, although it’s cruelty-free, it does not specifically call out being gluten-free or soy-free. If you have either of those major allergens, there’s a chance this product could contain ingredients derived from them. I personally have both soy and wheat allergies, and thankfully I didn’t have any reaction but it’s definitely something to keep in mind.

It also contains beeswax, which I personally love in mascara formulas, but while this product is cruelty-free, it is not vegan.

Overall, this is a solid mascara. I definitely understand the concept, the price point is great, and despite a few things I’d tweak, I would absolutely recommend it.
