Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (MH3U) - Episode 16: Seeing Green

In today's episode of the "MH3U" playthrough, we progress through HR 7 by hunting a Green Nargacuga, a Deviljho, and a Stygian Zinogre, as well as a Black Diablos and Sand Barioth in the hopes of getting the remaining Diablos Hardhorn that I need for my endgame build.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again: HR 7 is where the game decides that you've spent enough time living on easy street and tries to crush you into a fine powder. Seriously, between that Green Nargacuga and that Stygian Zinogre, it was only by the grace of God that I was able to do as well as I did today- especially with the latter, what with it firing projectiles that'll hone in on you, as well as raining down lightning when it's howling, i.e. the time when it's most vulnerable. Not to mention, many of the Stygian Zinogre's attacks are capable of inflicting dragon blight.
Thankfully, since I've been using a great sword build, dragon blight isn't too devastating since the weapon relies more on raw power than its element/status. However, if you're running dual blades, sword and shield, or another weapon that needs its element to reach its full potential, then you'll probably want to invest in creating a build with 20 dragon resistance or pack plenty of nulberries.

Speaking of builds, as much as I love the "Monster Hunter" series, one thing I've always disliked is how if you want to create a solid endgame build, you'll find yourself having to collect at least one monster material that has a 5% or lower chance of spawning. Now I get that the game wants you to work for your gear, but it can be downright demoralizing when you're hunting the same monster for hours on end (and chances are it won't be a monster that you particularly like to hunt), only for your efforts to be fruitless. And mind you, it's always the material that you need. Meanwhile, when you have zero interest in a monster's rarest drop, you get it on the first hunt.
That's why the second I saw "Plain Dangerous" on the quest board, I jumped on it without a second thought. You see, under normal circumstances, the only way to get a Diablos Hardhorn is as a 5% or 7% reward for breaking both horns on a standard or Black Diablos, respectively. That's right; you have to go through all of the trouble of breaking both horns- a task that's easier said than done- just for a 5% or 7% chance. But with "Plain Dangerous", in addition to the break reward, there's a small chance that it can appear as a standard reward, meaning that not only do you not need to break both of the Black Diablos' horns, but you can further increase your odds with the Lucky Cat food skill.
