Emotional homecoming as Wisconsin National Guard soldiers return from Middle East deployment

All of the Oshkosh-based Wisconsin National Guard troops who were deployed to the Middle East have been reunited with their loved ones.

Last week, 219 soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, were welcomed home in a pair of ceremonies held at the Appleton Flight Center. On Wednesday, the third group, comprising 166 troops, returned to Northeast Wisconsin.

More than a year ago, the regiment was sent to the U.S. Central Command area of operations in Kuwait and Iraq to work with NATO partners to promote stability in the region. The soldiers served in security assurance across nine countries in the Middle East. Their work also included involvement in the Strait of Hormuz and Operation Epic Fury.

Maj. Gen. Matt Strub, adjutant general of the Wisconsin National Guard, said the soldiers did not hesitate to step up.

Brenna Welch said it was a year of hard work during her husband’s deployment. Their reunion on the tarmac drew tears of joy.

The day was full of touching reunions between soldiers and their families as the troops cap off a year away from home. The soldiers' deployment lasted about one month longer than initially expected.
