Vladimir Rebikov : Waltz from ' The Christmas Tree ' Op. 21
Russian title : Ёлка (Yolka)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rebikov (1866-1920) was a Russian modernist composer, and this piece comes from his 'musico-psychological' drama from 1901 which was very popular in Russia and Eastern Europe. This particular instrumental interlude is traditional and could have been written by Tchaikovsky. Although there are other versions on YouTube (some very good) I have recorded it at the request of a viewer who wanted to see a version with a more moderate tempo. The metronome marking on the score I used (crotchet=88) is uncomfortably slow for a 21st century piano solo performance of this piece - but I hope I have complied to some extent, and conveyed something of the melancholy the composer was obviously seeking! My thumbnail shows artwork from an early Russian edition of piano pieces taken from the opera.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear
