THE WESTERN ROMAN EMPIRE — How an Empire Became Kingdoms

THE WESTERN ROMAN EMPIRE — How an Empire Became Kingdoms

In the autumn of 476 AD, a teenager named Romulus Augustulus was deposed as emperor. He was not killed. He was sent to a comfortable villa on the Bay of Naples — a small pension, a pleasant view, and no further obligations to the state he had nominally led. The man who deposed him did not declare himself emperor of Rome. He sent the imperial regalia to Constantinople with a letter explaining that one emperor was sufficient for the whole Roman world. That was it.

This documentary traces how the most powerful political organization in the Western world became a collection of Germanic kingdoms — and why the process was slower, stranger, and more complicated than the phrase "the fall of Rome" suggests. The story runs from the Hunnic migrations that displaced Gothic peoples into Roman territory in 376 AD, through Adrianople, through Alaric's sack of Rome in 410, through the loss of Africa to the Vandals, through Aetius and Attila on the Catalaunian Plains, through the years of puppet emperors, to the quiet administrative ending of 476. Then it turns to the question the documentary was always building toward: why did the Eastern Empire survive when the West did not?
