🌹THE ROSE WINDOW🌹

Rose windows come out of Gothic architecture, when builders figured out how to move the weight of the building outward and open the walls to light. That allowed for these massive circular stained glass designs built with stone tracery.

But they weren’t just aesthetic. In a time when most people couldn’t read, these windows acted as visual theology! They tell the story of our faith through color, symmetry, and light.

The circle itself matters: no beginning, no end, a sign of eternity. The whole structure draws your eyes up and pulls your attention beyond the building.

When Mary is at the center, it’s even more intentional. She’s the one through whom Christ entered the world, so the design starts with her and radiates outward, like everything flowing from that moment of “yes.”

Light passing through the glass mirrors that reality: grace entering the world through her.

She’s often called the “Mystical Rose,” so a rose window with Mary at the center ties it all together.
