ICE - I CAN EMBRACE CHANGE

I Can Embrace Change.

Ice, Crystal Meth, Chard, Fried Rice, Glass BBQ are some of the common names for the highly addictive and destructive drug ICE, which is crippling our communities across Australia.

Ice (Crystal Methamphetamine) is a stimulant drug, which means it speeds up the messages travelling between the brain and the body, with the effects lasting around 6 hours after use. It is a potent and addictive drug that has harmful side effects. The ramifications of addiction to ice, as with any other drug, can have detrimental effects not only on the individual, but the user’s family, friends and community. This drug does not discriminate between age, wealth, culture or gender.

The Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative, thanks to funding from the Victorian Government’s Ice Action Plan, have partnered together with community to create a powerful resource to encourage youth and adults of all ages to seek help and minimise the effects of this damaging drug.

Local artist Josh Muir crafted the powerful and emotive script titled ‘I can embrace change’. Local actors Zane Pfieffer and Thiily Jones have given their time and talents to bring the narrative to life. Filmed on Wathaurong Country around Ballarat and district, the Indigenous Hip Hop Project crew have turned this story into a gripping short film.
We want all members of our community to embrace change and avoid using ice. We encourage anyone who is currently using or is effected concerned about friends and family who are addicted to seek help.

Contact Direct Line on 1800 888 236, or contact your local Aboriginal Health Organisation, Community Health Service or headspace for help and support.

We want safe drug free community for all family’s to live in! We all can embrace change!

Script Written by Josh Muir

You can use fear to push you forward. I can embrace change.

Ice will hit you with euphoria a feeling of neon magic, it would seem like an endless energy source surging through your body. It will give you self-esteem and confidence beyond measure, it would seem an illusion of undiscovered capability as if you’ve unlocked 99% of your brains potential. In the initial use your dopamine’s multiply giving you a rush. It’s not until after using it you find a journey of fear. It’s as if your being grabbed and pulled down a whirlpool or sinking sand.

Now imagine standing on the edge of a platform preparing to fall. You’re never waking up but your always sleepless. Starving with your order served as an empty plate. Imagine feeling trapped inside a confinement of insanity with your demons haunting you. Suffocating in a space full of people but still feeling alone.Imagine being paralysed in a hold of societys expectations, with the pressure of suffocating. Having no control in deep water, slowly drowning. You’re out there crying for help, searching for a spark in complete darkness.

The darkness is not what we fear it’s the bright shine at the end of the tunnel. we find celebration of support, family, and community, which may frighten us because of the lone journey we face and the racing thoughts that took place in the hope for recovery: temptation, blame, guilt, anxiety, depression, and trauma. The paranoia will slowly ease once you walk that tunnel towards love.

It’s going to take time though with the help and support of community. You’re one step closer to a positive recovery, I can embrace change.
