Inside the Challenge of the Pakistan–Afghanistan Border
The Pakistan–Afghanistan border, commonly known as the Durand Line, stretches for nearly 2,600 kilometers across extremely rugged mountains, deserts, and remote tribal areas. Because of its geography and historical disputes, securing this border has always been a major challenge.
Creating a complete buffer zone along such a long frontier is nearly impossible. Despite these challenges, Pakistan undertook the massive task of fencing large portions of the border, something many experts considered extremely difficult due to the terrain and constant security threats.
However, even with fencing, surveillance, and checkpoints, it is unrealistic to claim that such a long and complex border can be 100 percent secure. Borders of this scale rarely operate with completely foolproof security.
Another major factor is the long-standing territorial and political dispute over the Durand Line. Afghanistan has historically questioned the legitimacy of the border, while Pakistan considers it an internationally recognized boundary. These deep-rooted claims from both sides make border management even more complicated.
Many analysts believe that if Pakistan did not have a highly dedicated and professional military like the Pakistan Army, maintaining stability along this difficult frontier would have been far more challenging. The army has played a key role in border management, counterterrorism operations, and maintaining security in one of the world’s most sensitive regions.
The Pakistan–Afghanistan border therefore remains not only a geographical challenge but also a political and security issue, requiring constant vigilance and cooperation to maintain stability.
