A sultan goes in disguise as a beggar among the commoners in order to snoop on them. He punishes those who are corrupt and rewards the ones who are righteous and perform good deeds. After an encounter at the house of Mak Firus and her two daughters, Nilam and Dian, and overhearing their exchanges about their dreams, he summons them to his palace. There, he announces that he will marry Nilam who has dreamed of marriage with a humble beggar. He then decrees that Dian, who has fantasies of the sultan being her husband, be engaged to his prime minister, a person whom she dislikes.

Dian is vengeful of the sultan and his new queen. She devises a plan with Jahang, the panglima (commander), to topple the sultan’s rule and make Nilam suffer. Marjan, a young handsome merchant, is sneaked into the palace to pretend to be Nilam’s old flame. In exchange for money which he desperately needs, Marjan performs an act to deceive the sultan into believing that Nilam is having an adulterous affair. Naively, the sultan sentences her to be locked in the death cage, a sentence that is meted out to any unfaithful person in his sultanate. Nilam and the truth remain caged as Dian’s plan unfolds and the panglima comes into power.
