Almost a Kilo! Nearly 1,000 QSOs in One Portable Ham Radio Park Activation
Experience an epic portable ham radio activation at Gulf Shore Provincial Park, Nova Scotia, where I made almost a kilo — nearly 1,000 QSOs — in a single day! Operating non-stop for about 5 hours on the 15m band, the conditions were perfect with mild 17°C weather and great propagation. Watch as I connect with DX stations worldwide from one of Nova Scotia’s top North Shore parks. If you love ham radio and outdoor activations, this video is for you! Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more ham radio adventures.

On October 22, I had the pleasure of spending a beautiful day at Gulf Shore Provincial Park, one of Nova Scotia’s premier parks located on the scenic North Shore. The day was perfect for outdoor activities, especially for operating portable ham radio — an experience that turned out to be both exhilarating and rewarding.
The weather was ideal, with temperatures hovering around a comfortable 17°C and just a gentle breeze to keep things fresh. This mild autumn day provided excellent conditions for radio propagation, and the 15-meter band was in fantastic shape. From my setup in the park, I was able to make approximately 800 QSOs (contacts) in about five hours of continuous operation — no breaks, just pure, focused radio communication.
Operating portable ham radio in such a picturesque setting added to the enjoyment. Gulf Shore Provincial Park’s natural beauty, with its stunning coastal views and serene surroundings, made it the perfect backdrop for this radio adventure. The park’s location on the North Shore of Nova Scotia also contributed to favourable propagation conditions, allowing me to connect with DX stations from around the world.
This trip was a testament to the joy of combining outdoor exploration with the technical challenge of ham radio. The steady stream of contacts made over five uninterrupted hours was a personal highlight, demonstrating both the reliability of the 15m band on that day and the thrill of global communication from a serene local park.
In summary, my October 22 outing to Gulf Shore Provincial Park was a fantastic blend of nature and technology. The perfect weather, the beautiful setting, and the successful radio operation made it a truly memorable day. For any ham radio enthusiast looking for a top-notch location in Nova Scotia, Gulf Shore Provincial Park on the North Shore is undoubtedly a prime choice.
