IAS Vaishali Singh, AIR 8 UPSC 2018, on why intelligent elimination - not blind guessing - is the underdiscussed skill that quietly decides Prelims outcomes.

In a tactical session for civil services aspirants, IAS Vaishali Singh, who secured All India Rank 8 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2018, reframed one of the most misunderstood aspects of Prelims preparation: the art of calculated guessing.

She outlined four precise strategies that transform uncertain attempts into statistically informed decisions. First, she cautioned aspirants to treat absolute qualifiers - words such as "all," "none," "only," and "never" - with immediate skepticism, noting that administrative realities and natural phenomena rarely operate in absolutes.
Second, she identified a consistent UPSC pattern in science and technology questions, where "all of the above" frequently emerges as the correct option because limiting the future applications of technologies such as Al or blockchain is inherently difficult.

Her third and fourth strategies addressed the 50:50 rule never leaving a question unattempted once two options are eliminated - and using linguistic etymology to decode unfamiliar terms in Ancient History and Art and Culture questions.

one Singh's broader counsel, however, carries more weight than any individual technique. She insists that intelligent guessing is a trainable skill that must be practised systematically during mock tests rather than attempted for the first time inside the examination hall. The examiner's mindset, she explains, follows identifiable structural patterns that reveal themselves only through repeated, analytical mock practice.

that intelligent guessing is a trainable skill that must be practised systematically during mock tests rather than attempted for the first time inside the examination hall. The examiner's mindset, she explains, follows identifiable structural patterns that reveal themselves only through repeated, analytical mock practice.

Aspirants who study these patterns in advance arrive at the actual examination with an intuitive decisiveness that others mistake for confidence. In Prelims, she concludes, the difference between selection and elimination often lives not in what you know - but in how precisely you reason through what you do not.
