Apple gives Siri an AI makeover in bid to catch rivals

Apple has launched an overhaul of the Siri voice assistant at the Worldwide Developers Conference in California. Rechristened as Siri AI, the upgraded assistant functions as a more conversational tool with a standalone application, on-screen awareness, personal context understanding, and the ability to retrieve information from the web. The rollout follows a two-year delay since upgrades were first promised, representing an attempt to close the gap with competitors in the artificial intelligence race. To power this technology, the company is utilising chips from Nvidia and technology from Google, while emphasising that personal data will be kept private through on-device processing and its own secure systems.
