There is endless debate about what is the "best" performance of the Rachmaninoff 3rd concerto, but this has remained over the years my all-time favorite recording. Not only because of the amazing performance by the late Alexis Weissenberg, but also due to the work of producer John Pfeiffer and recording engineer Michael Moran. They make this mammoth work more intimate by seeming to place the piano and the orchestra in the same room with you. Their techniques may be considered somewhat old-fashioned by today's standards, but I absolutely love the overall sound they produced here. And Weissenberg's breathtaking mastery of this concerto is the performance that made me fall in love with this piece. Too bad it is no longer available for purchase. I have maybe a half-dozen recordings of this work that I like very much, but this one remains the standard by which I measure all others.
