NYC: 5 Notable Painting Shows on the Upper East Side | Landmark Salvador Dalí Exhibit | Sotheby's

Tag along on a full art day across Manhattan's Upper East Side — to visit six galleries packed with contemporary painting and a landmark Dalí retrospective, then finished at Sotheby's for one of the most talked-about auction previews of 2026: Jean & Terry de Gunzburg Collection. Plus, for the music lovers, like us, a quick tour of the Rock & Pop auction preview.

HERE'S WHAT WE SAW:

- VeneKlasen Gallery (New York's newest gallery, formerly Michael Werner) opened with Sigmar Polke: The Dream of Menelaus — the legendary German postwar master known for his radical experiments across painting, photography, and unconventional materials. Dealer Gordon VeneKlasen, who worked closely with Polke for over 30 years, launched his namesake gallery with this deeply personal show.

- At Gladstone Gallery's Upper East Side space, Rachel Rose presents "The Rest" — a series of 14 intimate oil paintings on wood panel, depicting pastoral New York landscapes at different hours of the day. Inspired by devotional paintings of the Flight into Egypt and seen from Mary's perspective, the works strip away all figures, leaving only atmosphere: forests, moonlight, shifting skies. A beautiful, contemplative show from an artist best known for video work.

- Lévy Gorvy Dayan presents "Baladas" — the gallery's first solo show with Puerto Rican painter Armig Santos. Rooted in memory and the landscapes of his homeland, Santos's paintings are rich, emotive works that read as love letters to Puerto Rico, exploring beauty, decay, and cultural identity.

- At Alexander Berggruen, "Walk With Us Into the Forest" introduces New York to a major new solo show by British-born LA-based painter Tahnee Lonsdale. Her large-scale oil paintings on linen depict a spiritual ecosystem of abstracted feminine figures — translucent, layered, and hauntingly beautiful. References range from Botticelli's Three Graces to Gustav Klimt to sacred geometry.

- Stopped at Van Doren Waxter for the show of Jackie Saccoccio but the gallery was closed. But we got to see one the paintings of Saccoccio at the lobby of the buidling.

- Di Donna Galleries presents the most significant Salvador Dalí exhibition seen in New York in nearly two decades — "Dalí: The Great Years, 1929–1939." Gathering over two dozen paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from the Art Institute of Chicago, SFMOMA, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, FL, the show zeroes in on the decade when Dalí forged his paranoiac-critical method and his enduring visual language. This is also the final exhibition in Di Donna's current Madison Avenue space before the gallery transitions to the new Pace Di Donna Schrader venture.

- Finally, we headed to Sotheby's iconic Breuer building to preview two extraordinary events: the preview exhibition of the Jean & Terry de Gunzburg Collection — Design Masters, the most valuable single-owner design sale in Sotheby's history, featuring works by Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, Jean Royère, Alberto Giacometti, Jean-Michel Frank, Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, Alexander Calder, and Pablo Picasso — and the Rock & Pop Auction, featuring rare music memorabilia from rock and pop legends.
