Water Bears under the microscope

Water bears (tardigrades) shown under the microscope under different magnifications.

Water bears are microscopic animals that resemble bears with 4 pairs of legs complete with claws. They can be found in lakes, ponds and other aquatic environments, usually on moss. They are known for their ability to survive harsh conditions including extreme heat, cold, pressure, radiation, lack of food or water and even the vacuum of space! They do this shrinking and forming a tun, a protective form in which they lose most of their water and greatly slow down their metabolism. They will stay this way until conditions improve, and return to there bear-like state.

The magnification of each shot is shown in the bottom right hand corner.
