Cornified: Extremely Thick and Hard Callus Removal

A diabetic patient in his early 60s returns to the office 3 years after his last visit. He moved to another state during that time. While there he was unable to qualify for Medicaid, so he went without medical or podiatric care. As a result, he developed a severely cornified callus on his right foot, as well as other calluses. His history of multiple toe amputations places him at higher risk for foot ulcers and more amputations, including the legs. A check of his circulation with a handheld Doppler ultrasound showed decreased blood flow to the feet. The cornified callus was removed, and the other calluses were trimmed. Now that he is back in DC, he is getting the health care he desperately needs.

Definition:
Cornified skin or Cornification occurs as the skin continues to be added in layers. Over time it drys and hardens.
