Oslo nickname is the Tiger City

Despite the fact that the nearest wild tigers are thousands of miles away, Oslo is known as Tigerstaden, or the Tiger City.

The most agreed-upon reason is that the Norwegian poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson described a fight between a horse and a tiger in his 1870 poem ‘Sidste Sang’.

Every visitor surely knows the tiger statue on Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station. The 4.5-metre bronze statue by Elena Engelsen was a millennium gift to the city from Eiendomsspar.

🙋🏼‍♀️ Oslo is One of the Most Pedestrian Friendly Cities in the World

Oslo is serious about making the city center ultra friendly for pedestrians, and had plans to ban private cars from the city center by 2019.

In the meantime, however, it’s still a pretty great place to go for a walk. Jaywalking is legal, for example. Even at red lights, when there are no cars around, Oslovians use their common sense, and cross the road.

🙋🏼‍♀️ Oslo Doesn’t Actually Get THAT Cold in the Winter

Norway in winter has a reputation for being cold…bone rattlingly cold. But Oslo doesn’t actually get as cold as many places in North America. With temperatures generally ranging between -5 °C and 5 °C / C 41 °F, it’s chilly but manageable, and the perfect excuse to spend more time in Oslo’s cafés!

Pack some good winter boots if you visit in winter, and make sure they are nice and grippy on the bottom. Otherwise, do what Matthew tells us the Norwegian grandmas do, and pick up spiked shoe covers to stay upright!

🙋🏼‍♀️ There is a Statue of a Prostitute & Customers Outside Oslo City Hall

Speaking of statues, there is a particularly interesting relief of a prostitute with a couple of men (popularly thought to be a customer and her pimp or sweetheart) by her side.

This statue is located on the eastern facade of the Oslo City Hall, of all places. It represents the eponymous Albertine who was the main protagonist of Christian Krohg’s novel. It caused quite a scandal when it was first released in 1886 due to the nature of its story.

🙋🏼‍♀️ Oslo, Christiania, Then Oslo Again

Oslo has always been called as Oslo since the Middle Ages (where it probably have originated from “Anslo” or “Aslo”), but there was a 300-year period in its history when it wasn’t called as such.

After a fire ravaged the original settlement, King Christian IV of Denmark ordered another city to be built across the bay, which he named Christiania- after his own name.

🙋🏼‍♀️ Akershus Castle… In Florida?

Akershus Castle is one of the most iconic and historical places in Oslo. It is an important military site, and is currently being used as the headquarters of the Norwegian Ministry of Defense.

The castle is so iconic that a replica of it has been constructed in Walt Disney’s World in Florida, US.
