Elvis Presley - My Babe - The Live Comparison Series - Volume Sixty Seven

Never recorded by Elvis in the studio, “My Babe” was one of the few new songs that he included in his set list for his initial Las Vegas engagement, on his return to the stage in August 1969. It appeared mid-way through the run, and was sung only a few times but was recorded by RCA during their days of tapings for the 'In Person' album between 23 and 26 August. The master version was recorded at the International Hotel, August 25, 1969 during the Midnight Show. This suggest that Elvis deliberately included it in time for these recordings taking place, as he did with another selected few songs. Some sources suggest that Elvis performed the song during his midnight show of 15 August during this engagement, but none of the audio of these shows contain a rendition of the song!
According to available audio and track listings, Elvis would not return to the song on stage again until the Midnight show of 22 February 1971 in Vegas, and he would do so again twice in Tahoe in July later that year. Recordings of this Lake Tahoe engagement remain very scarce and only one of these two instances are definitive as audio is available and included in this volume.
The final surge of performances would all take place in mid-1972, with two of the three being sung during the June tour which had commenced with his Madison Square Garden four show engagement. However, both of these occurred after he had departed New York, being performed in Chicago and Fort Worth on 17 and 18 June respectively. With the knowledge that Elvis sung it during that tour, it might in hindsight have been a nice addition to the Madison Square Garden shows.
The final live rendition appears to be on 4 August 1972, the opening night of Elvis' August 1972 Vegas season. It is obvious that this was not a spontaneous version, as a rehearsal version was issued on CD2 of Sony/Follow That Dream's “3000 South Paradise Road” in 2012, which included recordings of some rehearsals for this Las Vegas engagement. These rehearsals took place in the Hilton's main showroom on the afternoon before his first show, and Elvis also did an excellent rehearsal version of 'True Love Travels On a Gravel Road' at this session.
As good as it is to hear the later versions, none come to close to those dynamic versions from August 1969, although the version on 22 February 1971 comes closest, but unfortunately only the final 50 seconds of that version were recorded.
Of eleven known or suspected renditions, all eight which currently have audio released are included in this volume and are listed below.
