Baling Hay by Horse — The Rake That Sets the Rhythm

This is the quiet step before the noisy machines.
A horse team pulls a steel rake that combs cut grass into one controlled windrow.

Watch the rake teeth: they lift, slide, and release so the crop rolls instead of clumping.
At roughly a 2 m working width and walking speed around 5 km/h, the field becomes a continuous line you can bale with fewer stops.

The engineering is modest but deliberate: leverage, wheel timing, and tooth spring do the metering.
When the windrow is even, the baler later runs smoother, knotter load stays steadier, and breakage tends to drop.

Good tools and technology make work more enjoyable.
