World Cup fans face steep transport price hikes across US host cities
Transport costs are soaring around New York and Boston ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with train fares rising as much as six times their normal price on match days.
New Jersey Transit says it faces roughly $50m in added expenses due to the tournament and argues FIFA — projected to earn $11bn in profits — should contribute.
FIFA insists transportation costs are the responsibility of host communities.
The MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford will host eight World Cup matches, including the final, with around half of its 80,000-capacity crowd expected to travel from New York City each game day.
Parking near the venue is limited and costs $200 per vehicle.
Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from New Jersey.
