You don’t define me

At first we were frightened. Could we do this? Did we have time to devote to his extra needs as they came in the way he needs? What are we even looking at in the future for him? No one really knew. Dr’s had a general idea but there’s no book written for him. Just educated guesses.

“You won’t be able to breastfeed more than likely.”
Oh yah? Because….do you see that chub? That’s boob & baby strength right there!

“He will have delayed milestones.”
Oh yah? He sat unassisted at 5M just like all 7 big siblings did as well.

“He will have feeding issues and may need thickened solids.”
Oh yah? We followed his cues and introduced solids when he meet all signs of readiness. He’s done great! Perfect? No. Does he require thicken solids? No. Does he have some issues though? Yes, however they are mild.

Muscle tone IS an issue but it hasn’t stopped him from sitting up, pulling up, crawling & cruising BUT it’s still obvious if you know what to look for you’ll easily find it.

“He’ll have speech apraxia among other language issues.”
Oh yah? He said Mama & Dada earlier than any of our babies at 5M on demand. Unfortunately around the end of November something happened and his speech stopped. All babbling stopped. All sounds ceased except laughter & crying. In return he leaves his mouth open and won’t close it.

🗣 Today though after months of trying to get him to talk and babble again by using all our OT, ST, and even PT training he said “Bye Bye” with meaning & was waving along with it all at 10 months of age.

This guy won’t let anyone define him not even his abnormality. Will he have his own struggles? Absolutely. He’s a fighter & one of the cutest, happiest, most snuggly fighters we know.

I am so proud of his this boy and all the countless hours of therapy, Dr appts, research studies, test, pokes, and prodding he’s endured….with a smile on his face (for the most part 😆).
