Campus to Corporate - Interview secrets, Smart work and Career growth
Getting an employment is probably the most landmark event of one’s life alongwith getting birth and getting married. In today’s competitive environment it is difficult to get a job of your choice. Though choices and preferences varies from person to person, it is important to have an understanding as to what type of employer you want to choose.
Today’s discussion is mainly based on your entry and stay corporate world. You obtain an Engineering, MBA, Lawyer, CA etc and try to get into Corporate world. Sometimes you spend a good amount of money on your studies and then expect a decent rewarding job. Well, here if you are certified from a very reputed institute viz IITs, IIMs etc you get a well paid job. In other cases, you may have to accept what you are offered, get a year experience and then get the next jump. Your first job in corporate word comes to you on the basis of your qualification. Institute and your initial presentations, later on it all depends on your abilities rather than your degree. Considering the culture of various corporates, I suggest you to develop these abilities to get into and adjust into modern Corporate Word.
To crack the interview:
• Be confident and focused.
• Try to be well dressed as far as possible.
• Give as many interviews as possible.
• Be positive and avoid giving negative answers.
• Be genuine, interviewers are experienced persons and can catch if you speak lies.
In your first job:
• Be sure about your area of specialization but accept the work beyond that as well.
• Equip yourself with latest AI tools at least at user level.
• Learn to smile and maintain your external composure, even if you feel something is wrong. Think twice and discuss with someone before reacting.
• Your practical work and your theoretical learning may differ, learn to cop up.
• Learn work in a group.
• Do not see the clock and do not show the clock.
• Your work should be your arrogance and ego not your speech.
• Learn to say smart NO.
• Equip yourself for a change even if you do not want to change.
This will make you a confident and desirable part of the team and that will help you to scale heights in your career.
Also refer to a LinkedIn study where they selected top 25 corporates in India for the purpose of job. They picked up a few parameters for companies to rank them. This gives us an idea as to what should we see in a prospective employer. A few aspects identified by LinkedIn are:
Ability to advance i.e promotions – how fast you get promotions to reach in top cadre.
Skills growth – How much your personal skill will improve
Attrition – what is the rate by which people leave jobs in this company
External opportunity – how other companies see you if you work in this company
Company affinity – how good is the work culture and personal care in the company.
Gender diversity - specially, if you are a girl
