How is Net Zero similar to the lunar landing? Net Zero Series Ep.1 (with Italian subtitles)

In this first episode in the new Net Zero Series on Climate Mundial’s Energy and Climate Weekly, the concept of net zero is discussed. Dr Rossetto likens it to the lunar landing—an ambitious goal that demands innovation, focus, and international cooperation. Net zero refers to balancing human-induced greenhouse gas emissions with removals so that the net contribution to the atmosphere is zero. In 2022, global emissions totalled just over 50 billion tonnes, with the largest share—38 billion tonnes—coming from energy production. The challenge of reaching net zero lies not only in cutting emissions but also in deploying effective removal technologies, including natural processes like photosynthesis and engineered solutions such as carbon capture.

Achieving net zero by 2050 will require more than current technologies. Though renewable energy like solar, wind, hydro, and biomass will play a key role—especially in electricity generation and heat, which contribute 33% of emissions—it won’t be enough alone. The path to net zero mirrors the space race: in the 1960s, many technologies required to land on the moon did not yet exist. Similarly, today's climate solutions may still be in development, but progress is possible with the right policies, incentives, and global cooperation.

The video emphasises that while governments have a vital role, much of the innovation must come from the private sector. Hence, creating effective policy frameworks and fostering international collaboration are essential. The episode ends by introducing future discussions on country-specific pathways, economic impacts, and levels of international openness to cooperation in reaching net zero.
