Bravery and Bagpipes: An Honor Guard's Story

John Concha, an EMT with the El Paso Fire Department Honor Guard, shares how he got involved through pipes and drums after attending the EMS conference for about 15 years. He explains what honor guards do—carrying the flag, posting colors, and escorting at events like funerals and fallen ceremonies—and how bagpipes and drums support those traditions. John describes practicing with pipers from across Texas at conferences and playing in large groups in Indianapolis and Colorado Springs. He discusses hearing protection during practice, managing the emotional weight of playing songs like “Amazing Grace,” and how gratitude from families makes the service worthwhile. He offers advice for firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics interested in bagpipes: be patient, stick with it, and step in even if you hesitate.
