Life in the Bangsamoro: A Visual Report from Women Civil Society Leaders

The outside world encounters the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) of the southern Philippines through fragments: war, extremism, and instability. But those frames are not just incomplete, they are deceptive and erase the people who call this place home, raise families, build communities, practice their faith, and strive for a more peaceful future.

There’s much to be excited about. With the BARMM’s first ever parliamentary elections scheduled for later this year, we could see Southeast Asia’s newest democracy emerge out of decades of violent conflict. However, there are warning signs, which we looked at in this recent article.

These photographs capture the small moments that together form a fuller picture of life in the BARMM. Taken by women civil society leaders during their travels to support local communities in conflict-affected areas, these photos offer a chance to see that world through their eyes. The troubled history of these places is undeniable. These photos are a reminder that, alongside that history, are ordinary streets, stunning landscapes, quiet acts of faith and the daily pursuit of peace.

“The Bangsamoro is more than what people see online or the stories they hear in the media. It is a place with rich culture and resilient, peace-loving people. Despite years of conflict and challenges, communities continue to preserve their tradition and work together towards peace and development.” - Singanen O Mindanao
