Most AI apps only use one type of memory. That is why they feel forgetful. There are three types and each one does something different. Short-term memory is the context window — everything in this conversation, nothing outside it. Long-term memory is stored in a database.

That is how ChatGPT knows your name when you come back after a week. Episodic memory is the one most people miss. It is not a fact. It is a memory of a conversation. You chat about Linear's pricing in March. In April, you open a new chat about Linear — and the AI says "you looked at this before.

" That is episodic memory. If your product is missing any of these three, users will feel it. They just will not be able to tell you why.
