How I Learned to Navigate Small Spaces in Japan | Elevator Etiquette & Cultural Awkwardness
SMALL SPACES, BIG DIVIDES: From Elevator Awkwardness to the Gaijin Seat in Japan
Ever felt a small space become infinitely large? This episode of Japan Rhapsody is a deeply personal storytelling session. Join me as I reflect on the unique emotional landscape of navigating confined public spaces as a Black man living and traveling abroad.
We dive into two specific, powerful scenarios that share a thread of unspoken tension:
THE ELEVATOR STORY: Being alone in an elevator with a woman you don’t know. This is a story about the complex, often unseen, mental gymnastics required to appear "cool, calm, and collected"—all while sensing the nervousness of the other person in that tiny space. How does that tension feel from the inside?
THE GAIJIN SEAT (GAIJIN SHIITO): Transitioning to life on Japan's trains. When the car is crowded, but the seat right next to you—the designated 'Gaijin Seat'—remains visibly empty. It's an uncomfortable and isolating phenomenon that many foreigners encounter, but which holds a specific weight from my perspective. This is a reflection on that distinct feeling of being "othered" in your daily life.
These are reflections on isolation, psychology, and the nuanced reality of being a foreigner. This isn’t a criticism of culture, but a discussion of the experience itself. I hope these stories resonate and open up a conversation.
