Battery Operated Pencil Sharpener with Duracell Freakshow

This is a pencil sharpener I had back in the early-mid 2000s. I am unsure of the brand. It is comprised of translucent plastic which allows for visibility of the mechanics.

It operates on 2 AA batteries, which unfortunately were left in the unit over time, and were Duracell. Of course, the batteries leaked ridiculously and made a mess inside the battery compartment. This is a very rare case where I'll give the batteries a pass as they are over a decade past the expiration date, though chances are they didn't just start leaking yesterday.

I was able to clean out the majority of the corrosion relatively easily, though deeper cleaning is required as some of the corrosion appears to have traveled up one of the contacts. The unit does still operate, and it even seems to offer some promise in performance, but the main drive gear seems to be slipping on the motor shaft.

While I remember this unit back in the day, I don't remember why it was taken out of service--perhaps this was why. There also seems to be something flaky with the pencil detection switch. Further disassembly, cleaning, and repair will be required to give this a good test.
