The Dread Directory App - Available Now on iOS - Coming Soon to Android
A preview of my new app called The Dread Directory.
Coming Soon for iOS and Android
What this app does
Notifies you when you're near a Dread Location. The app runs in the background and pings you when you come within range of a haunting, crime scene, or other macabre location — even when the app is closed. Set location access to "Always" for this to work.
Tells the story behind every location. Each site has its full history, exact coordinates, and turn-by-turn directions in your maps app.
Lets you add your own locations. Found a Dread Location we don't have? Submit it while you're physically on-site — the app verifies your GPS and requires an on-site photo.
DreadFeed. An in-app social feed for posting horror photos, captioning your visits, commenting, and reacting to other users' posts.
Getting started
1. Just open the app. No account needed to browse Dread Locations, see the map, or read DreadFeed. Jump in and look around.
2. Grant location access. Choose "Allow While Using App" the first time you open the map. For background notifications when you're near a Dread Location, go to iOS Settings → The Dread Directory → Location → and switch to "Always".
3. Allow notifications. This lets the app ping you when you walk within range of a site, even if the app is closed.
4. Claim a handle when you're ready to participate. To post to DreadFeed, comment, submit a new Dread Location, or like other people's posts, you'll need a handle. Tap any of those actions and the app will walk you through Sign in with Apple — it takes one tap.
Browsing Dread Locations
The List. Tap the list icon on the home screen to browse by category — True Crime, Hauntings, and Film Locations. Drill into a category, then a state, then a site to see its full lore.
The Map. Tap the map icon on a category screen to see all sites in that category around you. Pinch to zoom, tap any pin for a quick preview, tap "View Details" for the full story.
Directions. On any site's detail page, tap Directions to open Apple Maps with turn-by-turn routing to that exact spot.
Submitting a new site
Be physically on-site. Submission requires GPS verification within 100 meters of the location you're claiming. This keeps the directory honest.
Tap Submit. From the home screen, tap the submit option. The app opens the camera, captures your current GPS, and walks you through naming the site, picking a category, writing its lore, and adding a verification photo.
Wait for approval. Every submission goes to admin review for moderation. Once approved, your site appears in the directory permanently — credited to your handle.
Using DreadFeed
The feed. Tap the DreadFeed icon on the home screen to see a chronological feed of horror photos posted by other users. Tap a photo to see it full-size with its caption.
Posting from a site. On any site's detail page (after you've physically been there), tap "Post to DreadFeed" to attach a photo and caption to that location. These posts are GPS-verified and admin-moderated.
Freeform posts. Tap the ➕ icon on the DreadFeed tab to post any horror photo with a caption — no location required. Add stickers, text, filters, and frames in the in-app editor.
Comments and replies. Tap the comment icon under any post to read the thread. Tap Reply under a comment to thread your response. Comments support 20 horror emojis from the quick row.
Reporting and blocking. Tap the ⋯ on any post or comment to report content that violates the rules or block the user who posted it. Blocked users' content disappears across the whole app for you.
