MAP Sensor – Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor
📌 What is a MAP Sensor?
A MAP Sensor measures the pressure inside the intake manifold of an engine. It helps the ECU (Engine Control Unit) calculate the correct air-fuel mixture for optimal engine performance.
⚙️ Function of a MAP Sensor:
1. Measures manifold absolute pressure (i.e., the vacuum or air pressure inside the intake manifold).
2. Sends this data to the ECU.
3. The ECU uses this information to:
Adjust fuel injection
Adjust ignition timing
Maintain engine performance and fuel economy.
📍 Location of MAP Sensor:
The MAP sensor is usually located:
On the intake manifold or
Connected via a vacuum hose to the intake manifold.
🧠 What Happens if the MAP Sensor Fails?
A faulty MAP sensor can cause:
Poor acceleration
Rough idling
Low fuel efficiency
Black smoke from exhaust (due to rich mixture)
Engine stalling or jerking
Check Engine Light (CEL) turns on
📊 MAP Sensor Signal:
It sends an analog voltage signal to the ECU.
Voltage range: typically 0.5V to 4.5V.
Low voltage = high vacuum (engine idling)
High voltage = low vacuum (full throttle)
✅ Why is the MAP Sensor Important?
Without accurate pressure readings:
The ECU cannot correctly manage the air-fuel ratio
Engine performance drops
Emissions increase
