Petra - Tour of the Treasury, Royal Tombs and Hiking

Petra is one of the most unique sites in the world and in my top 5 archeological parks I have visited.

The park is vast, 45 square km's of known structures dating back from Nabatean to Roman times. There is almost much undiscovered and still buried. For example, underneath the treasury, a tomb was discovered 7 meters underground. It is closed off to tourists with a big metal gate.

You could easily spend 1 day or 2 days in the park and not see everything. Most people come in, visit the treasury, see some of the royal tombs then go home. People with more time or a second day, prefer to also visit the monastery and make a hike up to the place of the high sacrifice.

The entrance fee to the park is 50 JD or roughly 70 USD. The top guide was an additional 50 JD. I opted for the guide. There are bathrooms in the main part of the park but no bathrooms once you start hiking up to the top of the mountains nearby.

There are also several snack and tea, gift shops along the way but best to bring extra snacks and water with you.

If you get tired, you can take a donkey or camel ride, but please take into account the animals welfare as they are treated as work animals and live roughly.
