Unpopular President Uses Slush Fund to Attack Flawed Constitutional Democracy: Which Breaks First?

In this week's class we examine the newly created “Anti-Weaponization and Lawfare Fund,” the ingeniously dangerous instrument Donald Trump and his administration devised under the auspices of the Congressionally authorized Judgment Fund to distribute nearly $2 billion to Trump allies and loyalists in a wholly unsupervised and opaque manner. We look at in light of two additional contexts: the rapid and accelerating shift of Trump from electoral-democratic to authoritarian-strong man tactics; and the eroding legitimacy not only of the Democratic party but also of the institutional framework of constitutional democracy that urgently requires defense and repair if Trump's play is to be successfully resisted.
