How Retinoscopy Works: Projection and Observation system | Optometry | Opthalmology

👨🏻‍⚕️ Ever wondered how optometrists and ophthalmologists accurately determine your prescription using retinoscopy? In this video, we break down the fundamental principles of retinoscopy, focusing specifically on the projection and observation systems that make this technique so powerful.

Why it's an objective method?

Retinoscopy is considered an "objective" method of refraction because it allows an eye care professional to determine a patient's refractive error without relying on the patient's subjective responses.

Subjective method :-

There is a technique called dynamic retinoscopy, which can be used to assess the accommodative abilities of the eyes. This type of retinoscopy looks at how the eyes change focus at near distances. While still primarily objective, the observation of how the eyes react to near targets can be used to infer subjective comfort regarding near vision.

However, retinoscopy is often used as a starting point. The results obtained from retinoscopy provide a baseline for further refinement through subjective refraction.
