Jim Chapin: How to buzz roll
Jim Chapin (1919-2009) demonstates how he slightly angled his left hand upwards when doing a buzz roll when using traditional grip.
With traditional (military) grip, many players will either play with the palm facing the side (like Chapin, Colaiuta) while others play with palm slighlty facing upwards (Kenny Clarke, Gadd, Weckl).
I use the first option, but feel my buzzes sounds better when done as Chapin explains here. If you'd like to discuss more, please drop me a comment below.
This short excerpt is from Jim Chapin's video "Speed, Power, Control, Endurance" published by Alfred Music, available at amazon.com.
