Study of Two Heads by Peter Paul Rubens (ca. 1609)
Look closely at Peter Paul Rubens' 'Study of Two Heads' (ca. 1609). At first glance, it feels like a dramatic, tense moment between two men in a dark room. One stares up in sheer terror or religious ecstasy, while the other lurks like a ghostly apparition behind his shoulder. You can almost feel a narrative unfolding between them.
But the truth is far more clinical. Rubens didn't paint this to tell a story. This panel was a 'tronie'—a head study. It served as a physical database for his busy Antwerp workshop. When Rubens or his assistants needed a face expressing awe, fear, or contemplation for a massive biblical or mythological painting, they turned to this wood panel.
The two models never interacted. Rubens simply painted them on the same piece of wood to save material and organize his reference files. The phantom-like figure on the left was squeezed into the composition simply because there was blank space left on the panel. What feels like a haunting psychological drama is actually just a 17th-century clipboard.
