This creature has over 1300 legs!

Scientists discovered a millipede with over 1,300 legs:

It's a pale, eyeless millipede officially named Eumillipes persephone, discovered in 2021 in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. What makes this find so extraordinary is that it lives deep underground, in holes originally drilled by mining companies searching for minerals. Eumillipes Persephone breaks the record for the most legs ever found on an animal, surpassing the previous record holder, a North American millipede with a mere 750 legs.

Its long, thin, cream-colored body and multitude of legs help it navigate the narrow crevices of its underground home. Scientists believe it likely feeds on fungi, like others in its family. Its elongated body may have evolved to help it absorb nutrients efficiently in this resource-limited environment.

Millipedes are ancient creatures, among the first to inhale the oxygen we breathe. Their lineage stretches back over 400 million years, making them true survivors of Earth's history.
