Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov return to the stage in "Tosca," after lockdown

Soprano Anna Netrebko and her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov, appeared in an outdoor, semi-staged production of Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Tosca” in Naples in July 2020. The production by the Teatro San Carlo, one of the oldest theaters in Italy, was the first time the couple had performed together since the coronavirus pandemic lockdown. They and their co-star, baritone Ludovic Tézier, talk about the opera, and the special circumstances of this performance.

This staging was one of the first opera performances to take place during the coronavirus crisis. The stage was built on the Piazza del Plebiscito, the largest square in Naples, which is close to the Teatro San Carlo. To minimize the risk of infection from Covid-19, the members of the orchestra – and the members of the audience – were seated farther away from each other than usual.

Anna Netrebko sang the title role of the singer Floria Tosca in the opera by Giacomo Puccini. Yusif Eyvazov, sang the role of Tosca’s lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, and Ludovic Tézier sang the role of Baron Scarpia, the chief of police, who wants Tosca for himself.

“Tosca” is one of composer Giacomo Puccini’s most popular operas. It premiered in Rome on January 14, 1900, and was an instant success.
