How to Perform a Water Rights Audit Using IAMDDVideo Project 10
In this demonstration, we dive into a water rights audit scenario using the IAMDD framework. Managing irrigation demand isn't just about meeting crop needs; it’s about staying compliant with the legal constraints of your water rights.
The Scenario
We are modeling a dual-crop system totaling 210 acres:
- 110 acres of Walnut Trees
- 100 acres of Tomatoes
Both crops are irrigated from a single diversion point governed by two distinct water rights. The primary hurdle is the instantaneous flow limit. When both the walnuts and tomatoes require water simultaneously, the combined demand can easily exceed the legal flow limit of the combined water rights at the headgate.
The Solution: Rotation Scheduling
I demonstrate how IAMDD allows us to implement and simulate rotation scheduling. By intelligently staggering the irrigation events, we ensure that:
- Crop water requirements are met for both high-value walnuts and seasonal tomatoes.
- The diversion never exceeds the instantaneous flow limit of the senior and junior rights.
What You’ll Learn:
How to set up multi-crop demand in IAMDD.
- Managing tiered (Senior/Junior) water rights at a single point of interest.
- Using rotation logic to "shave the peaks" of instantaneous demand.
- Auditing your system to ensure historical or planned compliance.
About IAMDD:
The Integrated Agricultural and Municipal Demand-Delivery framework is a web-based tool designed to bridge the gap between GIS data, hydraulic networks, and water resource management.
