इस्रायल आणि इराणमधील थेट लष्करी संघर्षामुळे संपूर्ण जगात आधीच तणावाचे वातावरण असताना आता युरोपियन युनियनने (EU) इराणची आर्थिक आणि राजनैतिक कोंडी करण्यासाठी अत्यंत मोठे पाऊल उचलले आहे. आंतरराष्ट्रीय सागरी व्यापार आणि खनिज तेलाच्या वाहतुकीसाठी अत्यंत महत्त्वाच्या मानल्या जाणाऱ्या 'होर्मुझच्या सामुद्रधुनीतील' (Strait of Hormuz) जहाजांची वाहतूक रोखल्याबद्दल युरोपियन युनियन आता इराणवर अत्यंत कडक आणि नवीन निर्बंध (Sanctions) घालण्याच्या पूर्ण तयारीत आहे. युरोपियन कौन्सिलने या संदर्भातील नवीन कायदेशीर मसुद्याला मंजुरी दिली असून, यामुळे इराणच्या नौदल आणि लष्करी अधिकाऱ्यांना मोठा फटका बसण्याची शक्यता आहे.
