Let’s take a look at when the Run Walk Run method really come into its own, whether you're training for a half marathon, trail running or any other type of runner...

1 - Returning from Injury with Run Walk Run

Any physio will tell you that the return to running phase is a crucial part of successfully recovering from any running injury.

During this return to running phase, the tendency is for many of us to get overly excited and run too much, too soon. Hit the like button if this is something you’ve done before!

The simple solution for this is to follow a structured return to running plan to ease you back into running after an injury, gradually increasing your training load over time.

I’ve always found that using the Run Walk Run method as part of a return to running plan is a powerful way of being able to reintroduce your body to running bit by bit, helping you to avoid a repeat injury, or if you're starting running, using a couch to 5k plan for example.

2 - Controlling Your Heart Rate with Run Walk Run

If you’ve ever spent any time training to heart rate, and especially if you’ve been focused on building your aerobic fitness with lots of low heart rate running, you’ll know just how hard it can be to keep your heart rate under control.

Run Walk Run provides a great structured way of allowing you to use intentional walk breaks to allow your heart rate to settle if you find it creeping up during what should normally be a long easy effort run.

Remember, your body doesn’t understand pace, it only knows how hard you’re working. So even though you’re walking during those walk sections, you’ll still be benefiting from the workout, and you’ll most likely be able to run for longer as a result of keeping your heart rate under control.

3 - Stepping Up Race Distances with Run Walk Run

I helped my partner Holly train for and run her first marathon using the Run Walk Run method. Before we started marathon training, she was really intimidated by the prospect of running those weekly long runs.

We decided to use the Run Walk Run method during her long runs and on race day and she absolutely crushed her goal, finishing in 4:47.

As much as the physical benefits of Run Walk Run helped her prepare for her marathon, she’s adamant that the mental benefits of breaking the long runs and race itself into manageable chunks helped her stick to the plan when it really mattered.

4 - Reduce Training Soreness Using Run Walk Run

If you often struggle with aches and pains after a long run, perhaps consider giving Run Walk Run a try.

One of the proposed benefits of the Run Walk Run method is that it helps to reduce post-run soreness.

This is something I’ve seen in the runners I work with, and can only explain it by saying that in walking periodically you’re disrupting the otherwise repetitive pattern that your body experiences when running. This break in the pattern gives muscles, tendons and joints a break from the demands of running, in the middle of the session itself.

So if you know you’re prone to aches and pains after running, don’t be afraid to experiment with some Run Walk Run in your training.
