Pronounce and Stress Informal Contractions & Reductions in American English

Want to pronounce and stress informal contractions / reductions in American English? Learn why we use informal contractions & reductions like gonna, wanna, dunno, hafta, and many more. You'll understand how to pronounce them naturally in American English, and stress them correctly in complete sentences (this is the secret!). Spoken contractions are common in relaxed, natural speech because we combine high frequency words (or words we say all the time) with less important function words and reduce their sound to say them more efficiently. (That's why they're called reductions!)

We use informal contractions and reductions to de-emphasize and move quickly through words that don't matter and focus attention on the most important words through sentence stress. Many non-native speakers use spoken contractions without correctly stressing the rest of their speech, and that's why they sound unnatural and forced.

Here are the informal contractions we practice in this video:
* gonna = going to
* wanna = want to
* dunno = don't know
* kinda = kind of
* gotta = got to
* lotta = lot of
* lotsa = lots of
* lemme = let me
* hafta = have to
* gimme = give me
* tryna = trying to
* outta = out of
* shoulda = should have
* woulda = would have
* coulda = could have
* whaddya = what do you
* whadja = what did you
* wheredja = where did you
* howdya = how do you
* howdja = how did you
* whydja = why did you
* dontcha = don't you
