Gloria Swanson & ‘Stage Struck’
Silent Film’s Biggest Star Makes West Virginia’s First Movie.
Location scouts for the 1925 movie “Stage Struck” had chosen New Martinsville, West Virginia for the setting of the film because it was a large enough town without being too small and—best of all—it had electricity. The movie was about a river town waitress who dreamed of becoming a star, and for the lead they chose the biggest star of the day, Gloria Swanson. The actress, cast and crew of the movie arrived in New Martinsville in August of that year and locals worked as extras in the first movie made in West Virginia, as Swanson left the town star struck.
